Rochester is the seat of Monroe County in New York and the third most populous city in the state after New York City and Buffalo. It is 73 miles east of Buffalo and 87 miles west of Syracuse. The city is at the core of a large metropolitan area with approximately 1.1 million people across six counties. The economy is the third largest in the state, preceded by New York City and Buffalo, and is defined by technology and education. The region boasts a highly educated workforce and numerous colleges and universities, which contributed to creating a technology boom in the early 21st century, leading to the city being referred to as the “East Coast Silicon Valley”.

The city is also known for its commitment to culture and is the home of the world-renowned Eastman School of Music, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Memorial Art Gallery, George Eastman House, Garth Fagan Dance, and the Rochester City Ballet. Notable residents of Rochester are Susan B. Anthony, a women’s rights activist; George Eastman, the founder of Kodak; the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, an award-winning actor; and singer Renée Fleming. Some of the finest and most architecturally significant real estate is located within the city of Rochester. The storied East Avenue, affectionately referred to as the “grand boulevard”, with its network of side streets, is cited as one of the greatest catalogues of 19th and early 20th-century urban residential architecture. This area is also the home of the popular “east-end,” which is home to several upscale restaurants, hotels, and private clubs.
